“I am deeply moved by the trust you have placed in me. I accept this great honour with gratitude and humility, with an understanding that it is a very big responsibility,” said Khera. “I will work hard to be a strong and capable advocate for the unique and pressing needs of this riding, in Ottawa.”

Twenty-five-year old Khera is a registered nurse currently working in the oncology unit of St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto, community volunteer and a politically active Brampton resident. Having immigrated to Ontario, Canada with her family from Delhi, India at a very young age, Kamalpreet attended Lincoln M. Alexander Secondary School and went on to attend York University where she completed two degrees: a Bachelors of Science in Psychology with Honours, and a Bachelors of Science in Nursing with Honours. As an active member of her community, Khera has served in several diverse volunteer roles with organisations like William Osler Health Centre, South Asian Canadians Heritage Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel, Sick Kids Foundation, Peel Family Shelter and various others.

Also on hand were members of Team Trudeau including Ontario campaign co-chair Natalie St. Denis and nominated candidates: Raj Grewal – Brampton East, Rameshwar Sangha – Brampton Centre, Gagan Sikand – Mississauga-Streetsville, and Omar Alghabra – Mississauga-Centre.

Khera is the only female Liberal candidate nominated in Brampton to date and brings great energy and fresh perspective to the table. “Having diversity in our party is crucial,” said Khera. “Team Trudeau has a very healthy mix of females, youth, experience and most of all – candidates that are passionate about our communities and our country. We look forward to turning this riding red once again!”

Like many Canadians, Khera is the daughter of immigrant parents who sacrificed their professional careers to provide a better future for their children here in Canada. She wants to restore the link between hard work and equal opportunity to allow Canadian families to move ahead and progress in society.

Marc Garneau and over 500 people attend fundraising event for Kamal Khera

Earlier in June 2015, over 500 people, including Marc Garneau MP, former astronaut and guest speaker, came out to support Kamal Khera, the Federal Liberal candidate for Brampton West. The fundraising dinner, held at Chandni Convention Centre in Brampton, was a resounding success.

“Family reunification, fairness to the middle class and improved healthcare are pressing needs of this riding,” said Khera. “This is a commitment to you, my supporters and all residents of Brampton West. With your help, we can make Brampton West a Liberal riding once again!”

Garneau, MP, discussed Liberal values but also gave support and tips for Khera during the event.

“Elections are very serious matters and require discipline – discipline in how we approach the public, discipline in what we say; those things are extremely important,” said Garneau, MP.
